The Big-Mad Behavioral Study · Consent, version draft-2
What you would agree to
The study is not open, and nobody can sign up yet. This is the consent we would ask for, as it stands, so you can read it, and tell us what is wrong with it, before anyone is asked to agree.
It is a draft for a lawyer and an independent review board, and it will change. When it does, the version number changes with it, and everyone who agreed is told what changed.
01
What this study is
We are studying what modern work does to mood, patience and behaviour, and where the frustration goes. We are not assuming a cause; we are looking for patterns.
If you join, you will answer a short screener, send short check-ins for about a week (a text, or a voice note if you choose), and answer two brief surveys. Most days this is 5 to 10 minutes.
02
This is voluntary, and you can stop
You can skip a day, skip any question, or stop entirely, at any point, without telling us why. Nothing bad happens if you do.
This study is unpaid. There is no reward to lose, and we would rather say that plainly than imply otherwise. What you get is the findings we publish for everyone.
03
What we collect, and who sees it
Your screener and survey answers, your check-ins, and the contact details we need to send prompts, kept apart from your answers.
Nobody at your job. We never contact employers, and nothing you say is shared with them. We publish patterns across everyone who takes part, never your entries as you wrote them, and never audio.
Please do not name your employer or anything that identifies your workplace. If you do by accident, tell us and we will remove it.
04
If you choose voice
A recording of your voice can identify you the way a fingerprint can, so voice gets its own separate permission, and you can do the whole study by text with exactly the same standing.
Recordings are transcribed on our own computers. Your audio is never sent to an outside company, and we will never sell or profit from it.
05
The honest limits
We are researchers, not clinicians. This is not therapy or medical care, and it cannot respond to an emergency. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 in the US, or 911 if someone is in immediate danger.
Thinking about the frustrating parts of your day can itself be unpleasant. And any storage of personal information carries some risk of a breach, however carefully it is handled.
06
Your data, your call
Write to us and ask, and we will delete your entries and contact details, then confirm. You do not need to give a reason.
Until the study has its own addresses, that is bob@goodcitizens.us, and a person reads it.
07
What you would be asked to agree to
Four separate agreements. Voice and text messages are optional and can be refused on their own, and someone who refuses both can still do the whole study.
Required
I agree to take part in this study. I have read the above, I understand what I would be doing, and I know I can stop at any time.
Required
I am 18 or older.
Optional
I agree to record voice check-ins, and I specifically agree to Good Citizens collecting and storing a recording of my voice as described above.
Optional
I agree to receive text messages with check-in prompts. I understand these are recurring and I can reply STOP at any time.
